Dan’s inspiration to provide financial guidance to others emanated from his own personal life experience early in his life: “My father died when I was 15 and I saw what the lack of communication between spouses and family members regarding financial planning could do to impact the family unit and wanted to help families avoid such situations.”
Today, Dan applies his decades of real-world experiences gleaned from family conversations with his clients to help them avoid the financial pitfalls many face when financial planning is not given adequate attention.
Dan has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry and established Lockwood Wealth Management of Raymond James in November 2017. He was drawn to Raymond James due to the firm’s culture of independence that allows him to offer objective investment advice that is in the best interest of his clients. It fit well with Dan’s own deeply held belief that a client’s needs must always come first. Another plus was having access to Raymond James’ extensive resources and subject matter experts in all areas of wealth planning.
Dan is responsible for business development, overseeing investment strategies, and helping implement estate planning and tax planning strategies for their clients, with a focus on multigenerational family planning. He oversees a knowledgeable, dynamic team that shares not only his commitment to excellence, but also his vision and drive.
Dan began his career as a financial advisor at American Express in 1999. In 2002, he was promoted to district manager, where he managed the recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation of financial advisors. In 2005, Dan became field vice president, serving as a mentor to managers while overseeing day-to-day operations. Before joining Raymond James, Dan spent over eight years at an independent broker/dealer, where he was a financial advisor, district manager and a speaker at regional and global conferences. In 2010, Dan transitioned out of management and back into practice to align more with his passion for helping his clients.
Dan holds a bachelor’s degree in management with a concentration in accounting and finance from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Financial Planning Association and the Greater North Shore Estate and Financial Planning Council.
He is also a board member and treasurer of the Foundation for Hearing and Speech Resources (FHSR), a private nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life of children and their families in the deaf and hard of hearing community. Dan dedicates his time and knowledge to the organization after having to learn to navigate the school systems with his own son, Luke, who has hearing loss. His goal is to make life a little easier for those without the same resources.
Growing up in a military family, Dan moved around quite a bit but spent most of his youth in the Philadelphia area. Today, he lives in Wilmette, Illinois, with his wife, Erica, and their children, Luke and Ellie. In his free time, he enjoys golf, ice hockey, working out and spending time with his family.
